So it is Lolita

2011

interactive museum

This project defined my new work methodology and made a clean break with my dance/choreographic practice. It exhibits my struggle as an artist who lost the meaning of her artistic practice and is in search for a new way of artistic expression. My search (through the process of making a performance about Lolita) takes me through a continuous path of failures, dead ends and despair, resulting in a lot of material (fragments of my own writings, other people’s suggestion for Lolita’s character, videos of dance phrases, pieces of possible costumes and set designs, music inserts chosen for the piece, etc), which I am unable to merge into one performance.

Having nothing to show the day before my public presentation, I resort to curating and Marcel Duchap’s idea of the ready-made that allow me to abandon the intended artistic medium (performance) by creating a museum of failure, exhibiting the process of making, as well as the struggles, failures, wanderings and dead ends that would normally be hidden from the public eye.

Format used: a performance that turns into a museum

Element of disturbance/subversion: the audience expects to see a performance of Lolita, but in the first minute of the performance I tell them that there is no performance and invite them to visit my museum of failure

Method: pre-prepared curating, ready-mades

Key topics discussed: production and living  conditions in the arts, authorship, value of art
